David and Heather Abriel were two pillars of the community of Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia. However, their generosity and kindness extended far beyond Mahone Bay to across the Maritimes. They were both avid supporters of traditional music, and David contributed greatly to the North Atlantic Tionól and the PEI Uilleann Pipers Guild. David and Heather both died tragically in a car accident on the morning of February 2nd; but their impact on their friends, family, and community will go on for many many years. To honour their memory and impact to the music community of the Maritimes, the North Atlantic Tionól offers a scholarship to under-21s in order to further the education and love for the music that both the Abriels held. The scholarship covers the expense of the weekend registration for one person under the age of 21 to attend the festival, not including accommodation.
The Awardee will be announced on March 25.
